Writer, Jan Silvious, writes in The 5-Minute Devotional:
“The other day I came across this quote that touched something in my heart. ‘God brings men into deep waters, not to drown them but to cleanse them.’
“I like that. Often when we feel the lapping of the waves around our knees, then our waists, and finally our necks, we believe the inevitable result will be drowning. But when we feel that way, we forget Who controls the waves. We forget the eternal purposes of God are often beyond our comprehension.
“When it comes to the Lord, He delights to see us take Him at His Word when the water is the deepest. And there is a reason for that. He is doing a cleansing work through the rising waters. Think about the impurities you have asked the Lord to remove from your life. Have you said, ‘Lord, I really need to be more patient?’ Or, have you said, ‘Lord, I really need to control my tongue?’ Or, ‘Lord, my temper is just too strong, I need You to help me?’ If you need more patience, it is the nature of God to confront you with situations that keep bringing your impatience to the surface so it can be washed away.
“So, if you feel the waves of difficulty and impending trial lapping at your feet, remember a couple of very important facts:
- There is more going on than you can see. You are looking at the water and God is looking at you. While you study the waves inch by inch, He is studying you. He promises, ‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you’ (Isaiah 43:2).
- When you ask the Lord to work in your life, He will do just that. He will work to fashion you with pressure, difficulty and the lapping of the waves, if need be. But His goal is to bring you to the end result, not to make you comfortable in the process.”
So, friends, remember that thought, “God brings men into deep eaters, not to drown them, but to cleanse them.” You are not drowning … you are being cleansed!
